ResumoThe rainy season in subtropical area of South America is strongly related to mesoscale convective systems (MCS) activity. Although these systems have their genesis usually associated to moisture coming from tropical areas, there are still many issues that were not fully understood, specially related to their formation. In this work we focused in the identification of moisture source origin of continental and oceanic MCS genesis. A tracking scheme based on temperature thresholds was applied in infrared satellite images to detect and follow long lived convective systems observed during SALLJEX (South American Low-Level Jet Experiment). Results from a Lagrangean model were used to estimate moisture particles trajectories and allowed us to identify the origins of moisture sources that contribute to the MCS genesis. The results show that while the low level jet (LLJ) affects the formation of the continental systems, its effect on oceanic MCS is minimal. The tropical Atlantic Ocean, the Amazon region and the subtropical Pacific Ocean, appears as the main moisture source to the genesis of convective systems observed in subtropical area of South America, however, the incidence of these sources depends on the MCS genesis area and also the synoptic conditions.
